AP poll, week 8: Iowa State unranked at Baylor No. 12 · No. 1 that week: Wisconsin. The belt vs. the polls →
Where this game sits in the lineage
Baylor came in 336 days into reign #285, which began with a win over Kansas State, with 8 defenses already behind it; this was its 9th defense. Baylor went on to defend it 3 more times before Oklahoma State took it on November 23, 2013, 371 days after the reign began.
For Iowa State this was its 4th shot at the belt; it had never held the belt. It still hasn’t: 7 attempts in all, every one of them a loss or a tie.
This is the only time Baylor and Iowa State have met with the belt on the line.
Recap
Baylor's dominant offensive display against Iowa State resulted in a 71-7 victory that saw the Bears methodically dismantle the Cyclones' defense from start to finish. The Bears' passing attack, led by Bryce Petty, was particularly devastating, connecting repeatedly with receivers like Antwan Goodley and Tevin Reese to set up easy scoring opportunities. Baylor scored on nearly every drive, including three touchdowns in the second quarter alone that essentially put the game out of reach by halftime. Iowa State managed only a garbage-time kickoff return for a touchdown by Corey Coleman in the final seconds, unable to mount any sustained offensive pressure against a Baylor defense that forced three turnovers and held the Cyclones to just 174 yards of total offense.
- Petty-to-Goodley connection for 42 yards in Q2 leading to a field goal, showcasing Baylor's aerial dominance
- Lache Seastrunk's 48-yard rush to the Iowa State 2-yard line in Q2, setting up his second touchdown and demonstrating Baylor's balanced attack
- Three Baylor touchdowns in the second quarter (two rushing, one passing) that turned the game into a complete rout
- Sam Holl's interception return in Q3, exemplifying Iowa State's inability to execute offensively
