Which conference owns the belt?

Notre Dame holds the belt as an independent, so today it belongs to no conference at all. All told, the SEC has owned it longest of any league: 10,176 days, 18% of the belt’s life, across 69 reigns by 16 programs — though independents, mostly from the decades before conferences mattered, account for 48% of it.

Every day of every reign is credited to the holder’s conference in that season, as the College Football Data API records it game by game — so realignment is handled season by season. Three labels are folded where only the name changed: the Big Ten’s early decades (recorded as the Western Conference), the Pac-8 and Pac-10 (the Pac-12 under earlier names), and the record’s several flavours of independent. Different leagues that happened to share members (the Pacific Coast Conference, the Big 8, the Southwest) stay separate. Programs with no conference on record for a season count as independents. The conference belts are something else entirely: separate lineages that never leave their league.
