Baylor defends the belt, 70–7, at home over UL Monroe.
AP poll, week 4: UL Monroe unranked at Baylor No. 20 · No. 1 that week: Wisconsin. The belt vs. the polls →
Where this game sits in the lineage
Baylor came in 308 days into reign #285, which began with a win over Kansas State, with 5 defenses already behind it; this was its 6th defense. Baylor went on to defend it 6 more times before Oklahoma State took it on November 23, 2013, 371 days after the reign began.
For UL Monroe this was its first shot at the belt; it had never held the belt. It still hasn’t: 2 attempts in all, every one of them a loss or a tie.
This is the only time Baylor and UL Monroe have met with the belt on the line.
Recap
Baylor's defense was relentless from the opening kickoff, forcing four turnovers from UL Monroe while the Bears' offense operated at peak efficiency. The scoring began immediately when Bryce Petty found Antwan Goodley for a 63-yard touchdown just over ten minutes into the first quarter, and Baylor kept the pedal down with another quick score to Tevin Reese two minutes later. UL Monroe's turnovers proved particularly costly, with Joe Williams returning an interception 41 yards for a touchdown and Terrell Burt doing the same from 63 yards out, both in the first quarter alone. By halftime, Baylor had established complete control, and though UL Monroe managed a late first-half touchdown to Harley Scioneaux, the Bears cruised through the second half with touchdown runs from Lache Seastrunk and Shock Linwood to run up the final 70-7 margin.
- Goodley's 63-yard TD reception on Baylor's first score set the tone for a dominant offensive performance
- Joe Williams' 41-yard interception return for a touchdown in Q1 exemplified the defensive pressure UL Monroe couldn't overcome
- Terrell Burt's 63-yard pick-six minutes later put the game completely out of reach early
- Seastrunk's 75-yard rushing touchdown in Q3 highlighted Baylor's ability to score at will on the ground as well
