Belt context

Where this game sits in the lineage

Florida came in 247 days into reign #270, which began with a win over Oklahoma, with one defense already behind it; this was its second defense. Florida went on to defend it 10 more times before Alabama took it on December 5, 2009, 331 days after the reign began.

For Troy this was its 3rd shot at the belt; it had never held the belt. It still hasn’t: 4 attempts in all, every one of them a loss or a tie.

It was the 2nd of 2 belt games between the two; going in, Florida led the belt series 1–0; all-time Florida leads 2–0.

Recap

Florida dominated Troy from start to finish in this one-sided affair, with Tim Tebow orchestrating a relentless offensive performance that saw the Gators score touchdowns on five of their first six drives. After Tebow connected with Deonte Thompson for a score early in the first quarter, Florida's offense shifted into another gear in the second quarter, with Tebow throwing two more touchdown passes to Thompson and Riley Cooper while also rushing for a score himself, and Jeffery Demps adding a rushing touchdown to push the lead to 35-3 by halftime. Troy managed only a pair of field goals from Sam Glusman, unable to generate any offensive momentum against Florida's defense, and though the Gators added three more scores in the third quarter including a 32-yard Tebow pass to Brandon James, the game was effectively decided well before the final whistle. The belt stayed in Gainesville as Florida's defense limited Troy to just 139 total yards and forced three turnovers.

Tim Tebow's 36-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cooper in the second quarter gave Florida a commanding 21-3 lead and established the game's tone
Janoris Jenkins' interception of Levi Brown in the second quarter prevented Troy from mounting any meaningful comeback and led to another Florida touchdown drive
Jeffery Demps' 24-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter capped off a dominant first half that essentially ended any competitive hope for Troy
