Missouri defends the belt, 69–17, at home over Nevada.
AP poll, week 3: Nevada unranked at Missouri No. 6 · No. 1 that week: Illinois. The belt vs. the polls →
Where this game sits in the lineage
Missouri came in 256 days into reign #265, which began with a win over Arkansas, with 2 defenses already behind it; this was its third defense. Missouri went on to defend it 2 more times before Oklahoma State took it on October 11, 2008, 284 days after the reign began.
For Nevada this was its first shot at the belt; it had never held the belt. It still hasn’t; this remains its only belt game.
This is the only time Missouri and Nevada have met with the belt on the line.
Recap
Missouri dominated Nevada from the opening kickoff, with Chase Daniel and the Tigers' offense putting up 69 points in a one-sided affair. The scoring started immediately as Derrick Washington punched in a 59-yard touchdown run just 13:49 into the first quarter, followed by Daniel's 80-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin moments later. Nevada managed a Colin Kaepernick rushing touchdown early to stay on the board, but Missouri's offense was relentless, with Daniel connecting on touchdown passes to Jared Perry and Chase Coffman in the second quarter. The Tigers' defense held Nevada to just 362 total yards and one turnover, while Missouri racked up 651 yards with zero turnovers, controlling time of possession despite Nevada's 21:38 edge. By halftime Missouri had already put the game away, and the Tigers cruised to victory to retain the belt.
- Derrick Washington's 59-yard touchdown run on Missouri's first drive set the tone for a dominant performance
- Chase Daniel's 80-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Maclin extended Missouri's early lead to 14-0
- Daniel's three touchdown passes in the first half (to Maclin, Perry, and Coffman) established Missouri's offensive superiority
- Missouri's zero turnovers compared to Nevada's one turnover proved decisive in controlling the game
