Texas Tech defends the belt, 56–53, on the road at TCU.
AP poll, week 8: Texas Tech No. 18 at TCU unranked · No. 1 that week: Rutgers. The belt vs. the polls →
Where this game sits in the lineage
Texas Tech came in 7 days into reign #283, which began with a win over West Virginia, with no defenses yet; this was its first defense. It was the last defense: Kansas State took the belt in the very next belt game, on October 27, 2012.
For TCU this was its 6th shot at the belt; it had held the belt once before.
It was the first of 2 meetings between the two with the belt on the line; all-time it is 1–1.
Recap
Texas Tech's defense proved stingy enough to preserve the belt despite a furious second-half rally by TCU. The Red Raiders jumped to an early 7-3 lead on Seth Doege's 5-yard touchdown pass to Eric Ward, but TCU answered with Matthew Tucker's 4-yard rushing touchdown to take a 10-7 advantage. Texas Tech then dominated the second quarter, with Doege connecting on two more touchdown passes to Darrin Moore and Eric Ward to build a commanding 21-13 halftime lead. TCU refused to go away quietly, with Jaden Oberkrom's three second-half field goals (32, 32, and 45 yards) keeping the Frogs close, and a late Doege touchdown pass to Alex Torres with a two-point conversion made it 53-49 with under seven minutes remaining. The final tally of 56-53 represented a narrow escape for Texas Tech, which held off TCU's comeback bid to retain the belt.
- Seth Doege's 33-yard touchdown pass to Darrin Moore in Q2 that extended Texas Tech's lead to 21-13
- Trevone Boykin's interception to Cody Davis in Q3 that stalled TCU's momentum at the Texas Tech 8-yard line
- Jaden Oberkrom's three consecutive field goals in the second half that kept TCU within striking distance
- Seth Doege's 8-yard touchdown pass to Alex Torres with a successful two-point conversion in Q4 that sealed the belt for Texas Tech
