The 3rd ranked Texas Longhorns of coach Mack Brown welcomed the North Texas Mean Green with coach Darrell Dickey to open the 2006 season.  Texas opened their second Belt reign without award-winning QB Vince Young who had opted to go the NFL after his junior season but freshman QB Colt McCoy starred, throwing 3 touchdown passes & rushing for another, as the Longhorns routed the Mean Green 56-7 to retain The Belt.  Texas took control early as McCoy hit All-Big 12 WR Limas Sweed on the third play of the game.  Sweed turned a juggling 18-yard reception from McCoy into a 60-yard touchdown pass just 1:08 into the game.  Late in the 1st quarter, Texas took advantage of a short punt & drove 37 yards in 8 plays with McCoy carrying the final yard for a 14-0 lead.  Another short punt set-up the Longhorns next score as they drove 41-yards in just 4 plays with RB Selvin Young finishing the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.  Texas finished the half with a 10-play, 63-yard drive capped by McCoy's 5-yard touchdown pass to Young giving the Longhorns a 28-0 halftime advantage.  The Mean Green came out of the locker room & drove 80 yards in 9 plays with QB Woody Wilson connecting with WR Brandon Jackson on a 13-yard touchdown pass for North Texas' only touchdown of the game.  Texas responded with a 9-play 70-yard drive with McCoy hitting Sweed for a 29-yard touchdown pass giving the Longhorns a 35-7 lead late in the 3rd quarter.  A 32-yard punt return from Texas' All-Big 12 CB Aaron Ross gave the Longhorns the ball at midfield & RB Jamaal Charles scored the touchdown on a 10-yard run for a 42-7 lead as the teams entered the 4th quarter.  With back-ups playing the final period, Texas got a 2-yard touchdown run from RB Henry Melton before DE Aaron Lewis recovered a fumble from North Texas' QB Matt Phillips in the end zone for the final points.  McCoy finished with 178 yards passing with his 3 touchdown throws while Sweed added 5 catches for 111 yards to his 2 touchdown receptions,  Wilson threw for just 65 yards in the loss & RB Jamario Thomas, the 2004 NCAA rushing leader, was held to just 38 yards rushing.  The Mean Green finished 3-9 in Dickey's final season while Texas finished the season 10-3.  North Texas has not played for The Belt again.
