The 16th ranked, 8-1 Fresno State Bulldogs of coach Pat Hill met the top-ranked, 10-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll.  This was the first Belt game for the Bulldogs while the Trojans were trying to tie the record for 2nd most consecutive Belt defenses.  A win by Southern Cal would tie the Southern Cal Trojans (1978-1980) with 23 successful Belt defenses.  The offensive slugfest resulted in 935 total yards between the teams & Southern Cal's All-American RB Reggie Bush rushing for 294 yards with 2 touchdowns as the Trojans held on to defeat the Bulldogs 50-42.  Fresno State opened the scoring with a 9-play, 81-yard drive with All-WAC QB Paul Pinegar hitting TE Devyn McDonald for a 12-yard gain but as he was hit at the Southern Cal 1-yard line, McDonald fumbled the ball.  The ball flew into the hands of Bulldogs' WR Jermaine Jamison who took it the final yard for a touchdown & 7-0 Fresno State lead.  Southern Cal scored after a 6-play, 82-yard drive on a 5-yard touchdown run by RB LenDale White.  The highlight of the drive was a 65-yard run by Bush before White scored on the next play to tie the game at 7-7.  The Bulldogs took the lead again when RB Roshon Vercher scored on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the 2nd quarter.  Southern Cal's PK Mario Danelo’s 25-yard field goal made the score Fresno State 14 Southern Cal 10.  Pinegar connected with WR Joe Fernandez on a 14-yard touchdown pass as the Bulldogs pushed the lead to 21-10 before Danelo connected on a 31-yard field goal for the Trojans as the teams went to the half with Fresno State leading 21-13.  The Bulldogs opening drive of the 3rd quarter stalled & Bush returned the punt 16 yards to the Fresno State 43-yard line.  After a 7-yard completion from All-Pac 10 QB Matt Leinart to RB Brandon Hancock, Bush took a hand-off for a 35-yard gain & Leinart scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak as the Trojans closed the gap to 21-20.  Fresno State’s next drive was stopped when Southern Cal's S Brandon Ting intercepted a Pinegar pass at the Bulldogs’ 45-yard line.  Bush took the next snap 45 yards for the touchdown giving the Trojans a 27-21 advantage.  The next play from scrimmage saw Southern Cal's All-American S Darnell Bing intercept Pinegar giving the Trojans the ball back at the Fresno State 32-yard line.  Five plays later, Leinart connected with WR Steve Smith for a 6-yard touchdown pass & 34-21 Southern Cal lead.  The Bulldogs finally settled down for a 6-play, 65-yard drive with Pinegar connecting with All-WAC WR Paul Williams for a 20-yard touchdown pass.  Another Pinegar interception, this one by Trojans' S Scott Ware, gave Southern Cal the ball at their own 30-yard line & 3 plays later, Bush scored on a 50-yard touchdown run for a 41-28 Trojans' advantage as the teams started the 4th quarter.  After a short punt & a personal foul, the Bulldogs got the ball at the Southern Cal 15-yard line.  Pinegar hit Fernandez for a 6-yard touchdown pass to get the Bulldogs back within 6 points at 41-35.  On the ensuing kick-off, Bush fumbled & Fresno State's S Jason Huss recovered it for the Bulldogs at the Southern Cal 18-yard line.  On the next snap, All-WAC RB Wendell Mathis took a hand-off the final 18 yards for a touchdown & 42-41 Fresno State lead with 9:47 left in the game.  White scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:22 to play but the missed conversion attempt left the score at Southern Cal 47 Fresno State 42.  Pinegar’s fumble at his own 15-yard line resulted in a 26-yard field goal by Danelo for a 50-42 Trojans' lead with 3:06 left.  Pinegar led the final drive for the Bulldogs that got to the Southern Cal 25-yard line before Bing intercepted his second pass of the day & Southern Cal ran out the clock to claim their 24th consecutive successful Belt defense.  Leinart finished with 200 yards passing for Southern Cal while Pinegar threw for 317 yards with 4 touchdowns but 4 interceptions & Mathis finished with 109 yards rushing to go with his score for Fresno State.  Southern Cal finished the season 0-1 which includes 12 wins vacated as a result of Bush being declared ineligible by the NCAA; Pac 10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Bulldogs finished 8-5.  Fresno State has not played for The Belt again.
