The top-ranked, 12-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll met the 2nd ranked, 12-0 Oklahoma Sooners of coach Bob Stoops in the BCS Championship game.  The game was again mired in controversy as Oklahoma was chosen for the game instead of Auburn who had come through the SEC, arguably the strongest conference in college football, undefeated.  Oklahoma was chosen since they had been ranked higher in the preseason polls & with the reduction of the significance of the computer rankings, the Sooners publicity won the title shot.  This coupled with Texas being chosen for a BCS game over California after some Texas sportswriters changed their last vote of the season, caused the Associated Press to withdraw their poll from the BCS process.  Auburn beat Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl assuring another disputed BCS National Champion.  As for the Orange Bowl, it proved anti-climactic; the Sooners had no answers for the explosive Southern Cal offense & the Trojansí defense forced 5 turnovers in the 55-19 rout.  Southern Cal's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart threw for 332 yards with 5 touchdowns including 4 in the 1st half when the Trojans took a 38-10 lead.  Oklahoma's All-Big 12 QB Jason White, who had won the Heisman Trophy the previous season, had 244 yards passing with 2 touchdowns but was intercepted 3 times & sacked twice.  The Sooners actually scored the first touchdown of the game with a 12-play, 92-yard drive capped when White hit WR Travis Wilson for a 5-yard touchdown pass & they scored the last touchdown of the game on a 9-yard pass from White to Wilson; in between, the Trojans outscored the Sooners 55-5.  Leinart threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to WR Dwayne Jarrett that tied the game at 7-7.  Southern Cal's next score was set-up by a fumble by Oklahoma's WR Mark Bradley as he tried to handle a punt return.  Trojans' CB Josh Pinkard recovered at the Sooners' 6-yard line & on the next snap, RB LenDale White scored for a 14-7 advantage.  When Southern Cal's S Jason Leach intercepted White at the Trojans' 11-yard line, Leinart led a 6-play, 89-yard scoring drive capped by a 54-yard touchdown pass to Jarrett pushing the lead to 21-7.  Southern Cal's CB Eric Wright intercepted White on the next Oklahoma drive at the Sooners' 10-yard line.  Three plays later, Leinart hit WR Steve Smith on a 5-yard touchdown pass for a 28-7 lead.  Oklahoma's PK Garret Hartley kicked a 29-yard field goal to stop the scoring on-slaught from the Trojans but Leinart responded with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Smith with the score 35-10 with 1:56 left in the half.  Southern Cal's All-American LB Matt Grootegoed recovered a fumble by the Sooners' RB Kejuan Jones that set-up a 44-yard field goal from Trojans' PK Ryan Killeen for a 38-10 halftime lead.  In the 3rd quarter, Leinart connected with Smith for their 3 touchdown; this one coming on a 4-yard pass for a 45-10 lead.  Killeen's 42-yard field goal accounted for the only other points of the quarter.  Grootegoed intercepted White early in the 4th quarter that set-up an 8-yard touchdown run by White for a 55-10 advantage.  Leinart's fumble in the end zone gave the Sooners a safety before Oklahoma got their final points on the White to Wilson touchdown pass.  For the Trojans, White added 118 yard rushing to his 2 scores, Smith had 7 catches for 113 yards with his 3 scores, & Jarrett added 5 catches for 115 yards.  Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 LB Lofa Tatupu had 12 tackles & forced a fumble while S Darnell Bing added 10 tackles as the Trojans defense harassed the Sooners into submission.  Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Sooners finished 12-1, Big 12 Champions & ranked 3rd nationally.  Oklahoma would play for The Belt again in 2008.
