The top-ranked, 11-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll met the 6-4 UCLA Bruins of coach Karl Dorrell in their annual Victory Bell battle.  The Bruins were the last team to beat the Trojans for The Belt winning the 1992 game 38-37 &, as 9-time champions, had a 2-4 record against Southern Cal in Belt games.  Trojans' All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush had 2 long touchdown runs, PK Ryan Killeen hit 5 field goals, & the defense held UCLA to 17 yards rushing as Southern Cal extended their Belt reign to 12 games with a 29-24 win.  Southern Cal started early as Bush took a handoff on the second snap of the game 65 yards for a touchdown & a 7-0 lead.  Killeen hit a field goal from 37 yards as the Trojans led 10-0 at the start of the 2nd quarter.  UCLA got on the board when WR Craig Bragg returned a punt 96 yards for a touchdown.  After a UCLA missed field goal, Bush took a handoff 81 yards for another touchdown.  UCLA's All-Pac 10 PK Justin Medlock hit a 43-yard field goal & Killeen connected from 42 yards as the teams went to halftime with Southern Cal leading 20-10.  Killeen’s third field goal came from 34 yards with 7:02 left in the 3rd quarter.  The Bruins put together a 7-play, 81-yard drive with RB Manuel White scoring from 9 yards as UCLA closed to 23-17 at the end of the period.  The 4th quarter saw Killeen hit from 36 & 34 yards for a 29-17 Trojan edge.  The Bruins again put together a long drive, 7 plays & 80 yards, with QB Drew Olson connecting with WR Marcedes Lewis on the 4-yard touchdown pass.  The Bruins’ last chance ended when Southern Cal's S Jason Leach intercepted an Olson pass & the Trojans ran out the clock.  Southern Cal's Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart threw for 242 yards but was intercepted once & sacked 3 times while Bush finished with 204 yards rushing with his 2 scores.  Olson finished with 278 yards passing with a touchdown, 2 interceptions, & 3 sacks.  Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Bruins finished 6-6.  UCLA would play for The Belt again in 2005.
