The top-ranked, 8-0 Southern Cal Trojans of coach Pete Carroll traveled to Corvalis to meet the 4-4 Oregon State Beavers of coach Mike Riley who were on a 3-game winning streak. Although the Beavers had held the Belt once, they had a 1-11 record in Belt games including 3 losses to the Trojans. Oregon State jumped to a 13-0 lead before the Trojans literally rallied from the fog for a 28-20 victory extending their Belt reign to 9 games. The Beavers got field goals of 25 & 33 yards from PK Alexis Serna to take a 6-0 lead into the 2nd quarter. Oregon State extended the lead with a 7-play, 65-yard drive that was finished when QB Derek Anderson hit WR Marcel Love with an 8-yard touchdown pass & the 13-0 lead. After the teams exchanged punts, Southern Cal's All-Pac 10 RB Reggie Bush highlighted a 5-play, 77-yard scoring drive with a 44-yard run. Trojans' Heisman Trophy winning, All-American QB Matt Leinart hit TE Dominique Byrd for the final 18 yards but Southern Cal still went to the locker room trailing 13-7. On the Beavers’ opening drive of the 2nd half, Trojans’ All-Pac 10 LB Lofa Tatupu intercepted Anderson’s pass returning it to midfield. Five plays later, Leinart & Byrd connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass giving Southern Cal a 14-13 lead. Early in the 4th quarter, Bush gave the Trojans a 21-13 lead with a 65-yard punt return for a touchdown. The Southern Cal defense held again forcing another Oregon State punt & with 11:01 to play as the drive opened, Leinart hit TE Alex Holmes for a 48-yard gain setting up RB LenDale White carries on 5 of the next 6 plays. White scored from 5 yards as the Trojans pushed the lead to 28-13. Anderson was able to find WR Josh Hawkins for a 36-yard touchdown but with only 2:36 left in the game Southern Cal recovered the on-side kick & ran out the clock. Leinart finished with 205 yards passing with 2 touchdowns & White added 116 yards rushing to his score. For the Beavers, Anderson threw for 330 yards with 2 touchdowns but was intercepted twice & sacked twice while All-Pac 10 WR Mike Hass added 8 catches for 119 yards in the losing effort. Southern Cal finished the season 11-0 which does not include 2 wins that were vacated by the NCAA as Bush was ruled ineligible for the final 2 games of the season; Pac 10 Champions & National Champions while the Beavers finished 7-5. Oregon State has not played for The Belt again.
