The 2nd ranked, 8-0 Virginia Tech Hokies with coach Frank Beamer traveled to the Orange Bowl to battle the 3rd ranked, 6-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis.  Virginia Tech's QB Michael Vick started the game but his sprained ankle limited his play & effectiveness.  The Hurricanes, who had lost the past 5 games to Virginia Tech, took no mercy on the Hokies.  Miami's All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey hit All-American WR Santana Moss for a 42-yard touchdown & RB James Jackson scored on a 17-yard run to give the Hurricanes a 14-0 1st quarter lead.  Dorsey connected with All-Big East TE Jeremy Shockey for a 44-yard touchdown as Miami took a 21-0 halftime lead.  The 3rd quarter was more of the same as RB Najeh Davenport broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run & 28-0 Miami lead.  Vick was unable to play the 2nd half but the Hokies rallied in the 4th quarter behind back-up QB Dave Meyer & All-Big East RB Lee Suggs.  Suggs scored from 1 yard to get the Hokies on the board but Dorsey responded with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Moss.  Meyer hit WR Emmett Johnson for a 69-yard touchdown but an interception by Hurricanes' All-Big East S Ed Reed was returned 44 yards for another Miami touchdown.  Suggs scored from 3 yards but with 1:36 to play, there was no time for a bigger rally.   Miami posted a 41-21 win leaving many to wonder what might have happened if the injured Vick had not played the 1st half.  Dorsey finished with 283 yards passing with 3 touchdowns while Moss made 4 catches for 154 yards with 2 touchdowns & Jackson finished with 145 yards rushing with a touchdown.  Virginia Tech’s Vick was held to 9 yards passing with an interception, a fumble, as well as just 5 yards rushing while Suggs finished with 121 yards rushing with 2 touchdowns & Meyer threw for 225 yards with a touchdown.  Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Hokies finished 11-1 & ranked 6th nationally.  Virginia Tech would play for The Belt again in 2001.
