The 2nd ranked, 3-0 Florida State Seminoles & coach Bobby Bowden met the 2-0 Louisville Cardinals with coach John L. Smith.  While the Florida State offense appeared to take the game off, the defense came to dominate.  The Cardinals, who entered the game averaging 46 points & 435 yards a game, were held to 3 yards rushing on 21 attempts by the Seminoles' defense.  Florida State's All-ACC LB Tommy Polley, who also forced a fumble, returned an interception 4 yards for a touchdown as Florida State shutout Louisville 31-0 to retain The Belt.  The game saw 26 penalties called on the teams for 243 yards.  Seminoles' RB Travis opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter.  The 2nd quarter saw PK Matt Munyon kick a 23-yard field goal as well as Polley's interception return giving Florida State a 17-0 halftime edge.  Seminoles' Heisman Trophy winning, All-ACC QB Chris Weinke scored on a 2-yard touchdown run & threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to WR Atrews Bell for the final tally.  Minor rushed for 120 yards with a touchdown while Weinke threw for 221 yards with a touchdown & rushed for another touchdown but his 3 interceptions slowed the Seminole offense to a crawl.  Louisville's All-Conference USA QB Dave Ragone threw for 207 yards but was unable to get the Cardinals into the end zone against the Seminoles’ defense led by All-American CB Tay Cody & All-American DE Jamal Reynolds.  Cardinals’ All-Conference USA TE Ronnie Ghent added 7 catches for 123 yards.  Florida State finished the season 11-2; ACC Champions, ranked 5th nationally while the Cardinals finished 9-3 & Conference USA Champions.  Louisville has not played for The Belt again.
