The 2nd ranked, 9-1 Miami Hurricanes of coach Butch Davis welcomed the 6-4 Boston College Eagles of coach Tom O’Brien to the Orange Bowl with The Belt on the line & some extra motivation.  The Hurricanes were in ranked 2nd in the polls but the BCS computers used to determine the championship game had them behind Florida State in spite of Miami's win over the Seminoles earlier in the year.  Now, Miami had to win to impress the computers; that meant a very large margin of victory was required.  Things didn’t start out as planned for the Hurricanes as the Eagles took the opening possession & drove 80 yards in 9 plays with All-Big East RB William Green carrying the final yard for the touchdown.  Things seemed to be getting worse as Miami fumbled at the Boston College 19-yard line on their opening drive but this was the last break the Eagles got.  After punting, the Hurricanes got on the board with a 19-yard field goal from PK Todd Sievers.  Miami's LB Howard Clark intercepted a pass from Eagles’ QB Tim Hasselbeck & returned it 64 yards to get the Hurricanes in scoring position.  Hurricanes' All-Big East QB Ken Dorsey hit All-American WR Santana Moss for a 23-yard touchdown pass giving Miami a 10-3 lead they would not relinquish.  Dorsey connected with All-Big East TE Jeremy Shockey for a 5-yard score & WR Reggie Wayne on a 3-yard touchdown pass as Miami took a 24-6 halftime lead.  The 3rd quarter was more of the same as Dorsey connected with Moss for a 13-yard touchdown pass & RB James Jackson on an 8-yard touchdown pass.  Moss then returned a punt 85 yards giving the Hurricanes as 45-6 advantage.  Miami's WR Daryl Jones returned the next Eagles’ punt 87 yards for a touchdown to close out the scoring giving Miami a 52-6 win.  Dorsey finished with 252 yards with 5 touchdowns & Moss finished with 5 catches for 64 yards with 2 touchdowns to go with his return touchdown.  Hasselbeck threw for 120 yards with an interception in the loss.  Sadly for the Hurricanes, the win was not impressive enough for the computers as Florida State was selected to meet Oklahoma in the BCS Championship game.  Because of this, the BCS again modified its selection system for the next season adding a “Quality Win” component so teams received a bonus for beating a team ranked in the BCS top 15.  Miami finished 11-1; Big East Champions, ranked 2nd nationally in Davis’ final season while the Eagles finished 7-5.  Boston College would play for The Belt again in 2001.
