The 4th ranked, 2-0 Nebraska Cornhuskers of first-year coach Frank Solich traveled to Berkley to meet the 1-0 California Golden Bears of coach Tom Holmoe.  Nebraska's QB Eric Crouch rushed for 2 first-half touchdowns as & the Cornhuskers’ Blackshirts defense held the Golden Bears to a single field goal in a 24-3 Nebraska win.  The Cornhuskers played without 5 regular starters who were out due to injuries including QB Bobby Newcombe & RB DeAngelo Evans but the Cornhuskers still managed 434 yards of total offense while the Blackshirts held the Golden Bears to just 12 yards rushing & sacked California's QB Justin Vedder 6 times.  The Cornhuskers scored on their opening drive when Crouch got into the end zone on a 1-yard keeper to cap a 67-yard drive.  In the 2nd quarter, Crouch scored again on a 3-yard run giving Nebraska a 14-0 halftime lead.  California’s only points came in the 3rd quarter on a 38-yard field goal by PK Tim Wolleck.  The Cornhuskers put the game out of reach in the 4th quarter when QB Monte Cristo led a 9-play, 70-yard drive ending in a 5-yard touchdown pass to WR Shevin Wiggins.  Cornhuskers' PK Kris Brown finished the scoring for Nebraska when he connected on a 41-yard field goal with just 0:19 left to play.  For the Golden Bears, Vedder finished with 224 yards passing & All-Pac 10 WR Dameane Douglas added 5 catches for 124 yards.  Nebraska finished the season 9-4; ranked 19th nationally while the Golden Bears finished 5-6.  California would play for The Belt again in 2004.
