For the 2nd time, the Territorial Cup battle also featured The Belt as the 5-5 Arizona Wildcats of coach Dick Tomey faced the 6-4 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Bruce Snyder.  Arizona's QB Dan White threw 3 touchdown passes as the Wildcats overcame 4 turnovers to rally from 14 points behind in the last 7 minutes & PK Jonathan Prasuhn hit a 36-yard field goal with 0:22 left to claim The Belt with a 31-28 victory.  After forcing the Wildcats to punt, the Sun Devils took a 3-0 lead following their opening drive when PK Robert Nycz kicked a 41-yard field goal.  The highlight of Arizona State's opening drive was a 35-yard pass & catch to the Arizona 24-yard line from All-Pac 10 QB Jake Plummer to WR Keith Poole.  Sun Devils' RB Terry Battle finished a 95-yard drive when he scored on a 5-yard touchdown run as Arizona State pushed the lead to 10-0 early in the 2nd quarter.  White connected with WR Rodney Williams for a 39-yard touchdown pass to get the Wildcats on the scoreboard with 6:05 left in the 2nd quarter.  The Sun Devils' responded with a 4-play, 82-yard drive as Battle took a pitch around the right side for a 58-yard touchdown run giving Arizona State a 17-7 lead.  With 1:43 left before halftime, White led a 56-yard drive capped when he found WR Richard Dice, playing with a torn ACL, for a 7-yard touchdown pass with 0:05 left & the teams went to intermission with Arizona State leading 17-14.  Neither team was able to score in the 3rd quarter but early in the 4th quarter, Nycz hit a field goal from 46 yards that pushed the Arizona State lead to 20-14.  On the ensuing drive, Wildcats' WR Cary Taylor lost the ball after a short reception & Sun Devils' CB Lamont Morgan recovered at the Arizona 23-yard line.  Arizona State's RB Ryan Wood finished the short drive when he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run giving the Sun Devils a 28-14 lead after the successful 2-point conversion with 7:54 to play.  White quickly got the Wildcats a score back as he drove Arizona 80 yards in 7 plays before finding Taylor on a 6-yard touchdown pass with 6:30 left to close to within a touchdown at 28-21.  Arizona's All-Pac 10 DT Chuck Osborne forced a fumble as he sacked Plummer on the Sun Devils next possession & Wildcats' DT Joe Salave’a returned Plummer’s fumble 6 yards for the tying score with 5:29 left in the game.  After stopping the Sun Devils again, the Wildcats got the ball back at their own 49-yard line with 3:09 to play.  White methodically drove the Wildcats into position for the winning kick & Prasuhn drilled the winning field goal safely inside the right upright.  For Arizona, White finished with 289 yards passing with 3 touchdowns, Williams added 9 catches for 121 yards to his touchdown & All-American DE Tedy Bruschi recorded 2 ˝ sacks giving him 52 sacks for his career.  Plummer threw for 163 yards in the loss.  The Wildcats claimed The Belt for the 5th time & first time since 1994 while their win meant The Belt would not be defended in a bowl game for the 5th time & the 4th time in the past 5 seasons.  The Sun Devils finished the season 6-5 while the Wildcats also finished 6-5.  Arizona State would play for The Belt again in 2004.
