The 5-4 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Bruce Snyder traveled to Berkley to meet the 3-6 California Golden Bears of coach Keith Gilbertson. The Sun Devils rushed for 345 yards led by RB Chris Hopkins rushing for 187 yards with 2 touchdowns as Arizona State retained The Belt with a 38-29 victory. Hopkins played most of the game with a sprained ankle since the Sun Devils were already short at the position. Sun Devils' RB Michael Martin saw limited action after aggravating a previous ankle injury & RB Terry Battle did not play at all for Arizona State. The Sun Devils opened the scoring with a 27-yard touchdown pass from All-Pac 10 QB Jake Plummer to All-Pac 10 WR Keith Poole. The Golden Bears responded with an 8-yard touchdown pass from QB Pat Barnes to WR Na’il Benjamin. On the ensuing kick-off, Sun Devils' RB Brian Singleton ran 85 yards for a touchdown giving Arizona State a 14-7 lead heading into the 2nd quarter. Hopkins scored on a 4-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter & Plummer found Poole for another 27-yard touchdown pass. In between, California's RB Tarik Smith scored on a 13-yard touchdown run but the Sun Devils led 28-14 at the half. Hopkins’ second touchdown for the Sun Devils came in the 3rd quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run before Barnes found WR Bobby Shaw for a 10-yard touchdown pass making the score Arizona State 35 California 21. Sun Devils’ PK Robert Nycz hit a 36-yard field goal & Barnes found WR Dameane Douglas for a 2-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring. Plummer finished with 148 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. For California, Barnes threw for 247 yards with 3 touchdowns, RB Reynard Rutherford rushed for 111 yards, & Benjamin added 7 catches for 103 yards to his touchdown. Arizona State finished the season 6-5 while the Golden Bears finished 3-8 in Gilbertson’s final season. California would play for The Belt again in 1998.
