Coach Charlie Bailey & the 3-5 Texas El-Paso Miners had their 2nd chance at The Belt in 1994, this time against the 12th ranked, 7-0 Utah Utes of coach Ron McBride. The Miners had lost to Colorado State 47-9 earlier in the season. Utah's RB Charlie Brown rushed for 143 yards & four touchdowns to lead the rout of the Miners as the Utes retained The Belt with a 52-7 victory. The Utes took a 10-0 1st quarter lead with a 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Mike McCoy to All-WAC WR Curtis Marsh & a 25-yard field goal by PK Dan Pulsipher. Brown started his onslaught with a 28-yard touchdown run followed by a 3-yard touchdown run as Utah pushed the lead to 24-0. The Miners only points came on a 17-yard touchdown pass from QB Shawn Gray to WR J.J. Rowlett but Brown scored his third touchdown on a 43-yard run & McCoy connected with WR Deron Claiborne on a 62-yard touchdown pass for a 38-7 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter saw Brown score his fourth touchdown, this one coming on a 1-yard run, & McCoy finding Claiborne for a 9-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring. McCoy finished with 391 passing with 3 touchdowns but an interception & Claiborne added 7 catches for 128 yards to his 2 touchdowns. Gray threw for 184 yards with a touchdown but 3 interceptions while Rowlett had 6 catches for 102 yards with his touchdown for the Miners. Utah finished the season 10-2; ranked 10th nationally while the Miners finished 3-7-1. Texas El-Paso would play for The Belt again in 1996.
