The Texas Tech Red Raiders of coach Spike Dykes hosted the 15th ranked Oklahoma Sooners of coach Gary Gibbs in both teams’ 1992 opener. Oklahoma's QB Cale Gundy threw for 341 yards with 2 touchdowns & rushed for another score leading the Sooners to a 34-9 victory to claim their first Belt championship. Oklahoma's RB Earnest Williams scored on a 4-yard touchdown run & Texas Tech's QB Robert Hall scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter before Gundy took over. Gundy connected with RB Kenyon Rasheed on a 7-yard touchdown pass but the extra-point attempt was blocked & returned by Red Raiders’ LB Ben Kirkpatrick for 2 points making the score Oklahoma 13 Texas Tech 9. Gundy then connected with Williams for a 13-yard touchdown pass as Oklahoma took a 20-9 lead at halftime. Neither team scored in the 3rd quarter & Gundy took it in himself on a 1-yard touchdown run early in the 4th quarter to effective seal the win. Oklahoma's LB Aubrey Beavers capped the scoring when he returned an interception from Hall 5 yards for a touchdown. The 341 yards Gundy passed for set an Oklahoma school record for yardage in a single game. Texas Tech's RB Byron Morris rushed for 103 yards in the losing effort. The Red Raiders finished the season 5-6 while the Sooners finished 5-4-2. Texas Tech would play for The Belt again in 1997.
