The 24th ranked, 3-1 California Golden Bears of first-year coach Keith Gilbertson met the top-ranked, 4-0 Washington Huskies of coach Don James.  California's All-American WR Sean Dawkins as well as All-Pac 10 performers DT Chidi Ahanotu & OT Todd Steussie led the Golden Bears.  Washington's All-Pac 10 RB Napoleon Kaufman rushed for 208 yards with 2 touchdowns & the Huskies scored 21 points in the 3rd quarter to secure a 35-16 win.  Kaufman scored on a 36-yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter giving the Huskies a 7-0 lead.  The Golden Bears tied the score before half when QB Dave Barr connected with WR Damien Semien on a 13-yard touchdown pass.  The Huskies had alternated quarterbacks all season with QB Billy Joe Hobert usually starting & QB Mark Brunell seeing plenty of playing time.  Brunell took over in the 3rd quarter & took the Huskies 64 yards in 8 plays with RB Matt Jones scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run for the 14-7 lead.  On the ensuing kick-off, Washington's CB Russell Hairston recovered a fumble by California's RB Lindsey Chapman in the end zone giving the Huskies a 21-7 advantage.  A 35-yard field goal by the Golden Bears’ PK Doug Brien made the score 21-10 but the Huskies added to their lead on Kaufman’s second touchdown – a 14-yard run making the score 28-10.  Barr hit Dawkins for a 16-yard touchdown to get within 12 points at 28-16 but when Washington's RB Darius Turner scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, the Huskies had the game in hand.  Brunell & Hobert combined to throw for 119 yards to complement Kaufman's rushing.  Barr threw for 268 yards with 2 touchdowns & an interception while Dawkins finished with 6 catches for 156 yards with his touchdown but 13 California penalties proved too much to overcome.  Washington finished the season 9-3; Pac 10 Co-Champs, ranked 11th nationally while the Golden Bears finished 4-7.  California would play for The Belt again in 1993.
