Coach Spike Dykes brought his 4-5 Texas Tech Red Raiders to Waco to meet the 20th ranked, 7-2 Baylor Bears of coach Grant Teaff.  In a driving rainstorm, Texas Tech's CB Donny Brooks recovered a fumble in mid-air as Baylor was about to tie the game in the 4th quarter & returned it 99 yards for the winning touchdown as the Red Raiders claimed their first Belt reign with a 31-24 victory.  The Bears took a 10-0 1st quarter lead on a 42-yard touchdown run by RB John Henry & a 28-yard field goal by PK Jeff Ireland.  Texas Tech got on the board in the 2nd quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run from RB Anthony Lynn but Baylor responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass from QB J.J. Joe to All-SWC TE Alonzo Pierce giving the Bears a 17-7 lead.  The Red Raiders got a 17-yard touchdown pass from QB Robert Hall to WR Anthony Stinnett making the score 17-14 at the half.  The Red Raiders dominated the 3rd quarter scoring on a 21-yard field goal by PK Lin Elliott & a 6-yard touchdown run by Hall as Texas Tech took a 24-17 lead to the 4th quarter.  As Baylor reached the Texas Tech 1-yard line, Bears' RB Creig Stephens drove for the tying score but was hit hard by the Red Raiders’ defense.  Brooks grabbed the ball out of mid-air & raced for the clinching score.  Baylor did rally for a 3-yard touchdown run by All-SWC RB David Mims but they could not overcome 5 turnovers or the Texas Tech lead.  Hall finished with 117 yards passing with his touchdown while Joe finished with 190 yards passing with his touchdown.  Mims rushed for 168 yards with his touchdown & Henry added 124 yards rushing to his score as Baylor dominated the statistics but not the score.  The Bears finished the season 8-4 while the Red Raiders finished 6-5.  Baylor would play for The Belt again 1997.
