The 4-1 Texas Christian Horned Frogs of coach Jim Wacker were the first opponent for the 3-2 Rice Owls of coach Fred Goldsmith as defending Belt champions.  Texas Christian's QB Tim Schade threw for 2 touchdowns & the Horned Frogs scored 26 straight points in the 2nd half to claim their first Belt reign with a 39-28 victory over the Owls.  Rice took the lead on their opening drive grinding out 80 yards in 16 plays over 7:51 with QB Greg Willig throwing 8 yards to WR Winston LaVan for the touchdown.  Texas Christian tied the game at 7-7 when Schade connected with All-American TE Kelly Blackwell on a 7-yard touchdown pass.  Texas Christian took the lead with 4:39 left in the 2nd quarter when Schade found WR Kyle McPherson open for a 27-yard touchdown pass but the blocked extra-point attempt left the score Texas Christian 13 Rice 7.  The Owls score twice in the last 1:16 of the half with Willig throwing 5 yards to WR Tim Winn & 14 yards to WR Ed Howard giving the Owls a 21-13 halftime lead.  Rice appeared to be in control of the game when All-American RB Trevor Cobb, who entered the game as the nation’s leading rusher, carried in from 12 yards for a 28-13 advantage but that was the last time the Owls would see the end zone in this game.  The Horned Frogs started their comeback on the next drive covering 83 yards in 15 plays with RB Derrick Cullors scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run.  The missed 2-point conversion attempt left Texas Christian behind 28-19 but 3 minutes later they were in the end zone again with Cullors scoring on an 11-yard run making the score Rice 28 Texas Christian 26.  The Horned Frogs took the lead on the first play of the 4th quarter when RB Curtis Modkins broke loose for a 22-yard touchdown run.  Texas Christian's PK Jeff Wilkinson added field goals of 44 & 22 yards to help secure the win for the Horned Frogs.  Schade finished with 347 yards passing with his 2 touchdowns but 2 interceptions.  For the Owls, Willig threw for 198 yards with 3 touchdowns & Cobb added 121 yards to his score.  The Owls finished the season 4-7 while the Horned Frogs finished 7-4.  Rice would play for The Belt again in 1996.
