Coach George Welsh & the 24th ranked, 7-2 Virginia Cavaliers traveled to Raleigh to meet the 18th ranked, 7-1 North Carolina State Wolfpack of coach Dick Sheridan in the ACC match-up. The Cavaliers’ defense held North Carolina State to just 3 field goals & CB Jason Wallace intercepted a Wolfpack pass that he returned for a touchdown as Virginia claimed their first Belt reign with a 20-9 victory. The game had been billed as a match-up between two of the best quarterbacks in the ACC but North Carolina State’s QB Shane Montgomery was knocked out of the game with a concussion while Virginia’s All-ACC QB Shawn Moore was less than effective completing only 3 of 10 passes. The Wolfpack took the lead in the 1st quarter when the settled for PK Damon Hartman hitting red-zone field goals from 21 & 22 yards giving North Carolina State a 6-0 lead heading into the 2nd quarter. The Cavaliers got on the board with a 37-yard field goal by PK Jake McInerney before Wallace returned an interception from North Carolina State's back-up QB Preston Poag 40 yards for a touchdown giving Virginia a 10-6 halftime edge. In the 3rd quarter, McInerney added a 26-yard field goal & the Wolfpack countered with a 29-yard field goal from Hartman. The Cavaliers finished the scoring with a 3rd quarter touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Moore to WR Herman Moore for the final margin. North Carolina State dominated the game statistically with more plays (79-49), more rushing yards (186-172), more passing yards (169-113), more first downs (26-13), & more time of possession (36:32-23:28) but 3 turnovers as well as no touchdowns doomed the title defense for the Wolfpack. Moore finished with 113 yards passing with a touchdown while Poag threw for 127 yards but 2 interceptions in the loss. The Wolfpack finished the season 7-5 while the Cavaliers finished 10-3, ACC Co-Champs & ranked 18th nationally. North Carolina State would play for The Belt again in 1999.
