First-year coach Ray Goff prepared his 1-0 Georgia Bulldogs to meet the 2-0 Mississippi State Bulldogs of coach Rocky Felker. Georgia's PK John Kasay hit 3 field goals & the Bulldogs’ defense held Mississippi State to just 86 yards rushing in a 23-6 win as Georgia claimed The Belt for the first time. Kasay kicked a 36-yard field goal in the 1st quarter giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. Georgia pushed the lead to 10-0 when QB Greg Talley threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to TE Chris Broom. Mississippi State dominated the 2nd quarter but could only manage 2 field goals from PK Joel Logan. Logan hit from 27 & 36 yards but Mississippi State still trailed 10-6 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Georgia took advantage of two Mississippi State turnovers to score 10 points. Georgia's LB Morris Lewis recovered a fumble at the Mississippi State 22-yard line & RB Larry Ware finished the scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown run making the score Georgia 17 Mississippi State 6. Georgia's LB Matt McCormick intercepted Mississippi State's QB Eric Underwood & returned it to the Mississippi State 30-yard line. Mississippi State’s defense held firm but Kasay hit a 49-yard field goal to put Georgia ahead 20-6. Kasay hit a 48-yard field goal in the 4th quarter to finish the scoring. Talley finished with 93 yards passing with his touchdown while Underwood threw for 95 yards with an interception in the loss. Mississippi State finished the season 5-6 while Georgia finished 6-6. Mississippi State would play for The Belt again in 1999.
