First-year coach Bill Yung brought his 1-5 Texas El-Paso Miners to Tempe to meet the overwhelming defense of the 10th ranked, 6-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers. Arizona State's WR Ron Brown & RB Darryl Clack scored 2 touchdowns each while PK Luis Zendejas hit 3 field goals as Sun Devils retained The Belt with a 37-6 victory. Texas El-Paso took their only lead of the game when PK Scott Wedell converted a 39-yard field goal before Zendejas hit from 45 & 19 yards. Clack broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run late in the 1st quarter as the Sun Devils took a 13-3 lead. Early in the 2nd quarter, Arizona State's QB Todd Hons found Brown open for a 17-yard touchdown pass pushing the lead to 20-3. Wedell & Zendejas again traded field goals as Wedell hit from 46 yards while Zendejas’ kick was good from 43 yards giving the Sun Devils a 23-6 halftime lead. Clark’s 7-yard touchdown run in the 3rd quarter accounted for the only points of the period. Hons connected with Brown on a 35-yard touchdown pass early in the 4th quarter to finish the scoring. Hons finished completing 14 of 18 pass attempts for 194 yards passing with 2 touchdowns while Clack added 157 yards rushing to his 2 scores. Texas El-Paso's QB Kevin Ward threw for just 46 yards in the loss. Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Miners finished 2-10. Texas El-Paso would play for The Belt again in 1994.
