Coach John Robinson brought his 12th ranked, 5-1 Southern Cal Trojans to Tempe to face the stifling defense of the 7th ranked, 7-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers.  The Trojans had their usual array of All-Americans – OT Don Mosebar, OG Bruce Matthews, NG George Achica as well as All-Pac 10 players OG Tony Slaton, LB Jack Del Rio, & S Joey Browner.  Arizona State's defense proved too tough for the Trojans as they were held to 20 yards rushing while sacking the Trojans' quarterbacks 6 times in a 17-10 Sun Devil victory.  Southern Cal took a 3-0 lead when PK Steve Jordan hit a 50-yard field goal after Southern Cal's S Troy West recovered a fumble by Arizona State's RB Darryl Clack at the Arizona State 26-yard line.  Arizona State responded with a 29-yard touchdown pass from QB Todd Hons to Clack as the Sun Devils took a 7-3 lead.  Late in the 1st quarter, Arizona State's PK Luis Zendejas connected on an Arizona State record 52-yard field goal.  The Trojans tied the game at 10-10 in the 2nd quarter when West intercepted Hons giving the ball to the Trojans at the Arizona State 20-yard line.  Southern Cal's QB Sean Salisbury, who later left the game with a season-ending knee injury, found WR Jeff Simmons on a 21-yard touchdown pass & the teams went to their locker rooms with the game tied at 10-10.  The game-winning touchdown came in the 3rd quarter after Arizona State's CB Mario Montgomery intercepted Salisbury & returned it to the Arizona State 46-yard line.  The Sun Devils drove the 54 yards in 4 plays with RB Alvin Moore scoring on a 6-yard touchdown run.  The Sun Devils withstood the Southern Cal attempt to rally as the stopped the Trojans on downs at the Arizona State 8-yard line late in the game & at the Arizona State 25-yard line with their final sack of QB Scott Tinsley with 0:51 left in the game.  Hons finished with 165 yards passing with an interception.  Salisbury threw for 113 yards with a touchdown as well as an interception before leaving in the 3rd quarter with the injury & Simmons had 11 catches for 173 yards with his touchdown.  Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Trojans finished 8-3, ranked 15th nationally in Robinson’s final season.  Southern Cal would play for The Belt again in 1984.
