For the 2nd time this season, coach Joe Avezzano prepared his Oregon State Beavers to play for The Belt.  This time, the 0-7-1 Beavers met the 5th ranked, 8-0 Arizona State Sun Devils of coach Darryl Rogers.  Arizona State had just held Southern Cal to 20 yards rushing in their previous game & had only allowed 6 touchdowns in 8 games.  The Beavers put a healthy scare into the Sun Devils before Arizona State's RB Darryl Clack scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 1:09 to play to secure a much closer than expected 30-16 victory over Oregon State to retain The Belt.  Arizona State got the only points of the 1st quarter when PK Luis Zendejas connected on a school-record 55-yard field goal.  The Beavers tied the game at 3-3 early in the 2nd quarter when PK Chris Mangold converted a 22-yard field goal & took the lead when RB Bryce Oglesby scored on a 25-yard touchdown run.  The Sun Devils responded with a 10-play, 73-yard drive with QB Todd Hons scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 10-10.  On Oregon State’s next possession, QB James Burton was sacked & fumbled but Beavers’ RB James Terrell picked-up the ball before racing 62 yards for a touchdown.  The missed extra-point attempt left the score at Oregon State 16 Arizona State 10.  The Sun Devils got the lead back before halftime with a 6-play, 73-yard drive as RB Alvin Moore scored on a 4-yard touchdown run.  The successful extra-point by Zendejas gave Arizona State a 17-16 halftime edge.  Zendejas hit field goals from 28 & 37 yards in the 3rd quarter pushing the lead to 23-16.  Oregon State continued to threaten throughout the 2nd half but could not get into the end zone & when Clack broke loose late in the 4th quarter, the Sun Devils had the win.  Hons finished with 300 yards passing but 3 interceptions while WR Ron Wetzel had 8 catches for 144 yards.  For the Beavers, QB Jeff Seay threw for 53 yards completing only 4 of 17 pass attempts while Oglesby rushed for 117 yards with his touchdown.  Arizona State finished the season 10-2; ranked 6th nationally while the Beavers finished 1-9-1.  Oregon State would play for The Belt again in 1984.
