First-year coach Earle Bruce brought the top-ranked, 11-0 Ohio State Buckeyes to the Rose Bowl to try & wrest The Belt from the 3rd ranked, 10-0-1 Southern Cal Trojans of coach John Robinson.  Trojans' Heisman Trophy winning, All-American RB Charles White rushed for 247 yards with a touchdown as Southern Cal extended their Belt reign with a 17-16 win.  Ohio State's defense stopped the Southern Cal offense at the Ohio State 5-yard line on the opening drive before Trojans' PK Eric Hipp later hit a 41-yard field goal for the only points of the 1st quarter.  The Buckeyes finally got their offense going in the 2nd quarter driving to the Southern Cal 1-yard line with QB Art Schlichter connecting with WR Gary Williams for a 53-yard gain.  Ohio State failed on four tries to get into the end zone with Schlichter being stopped by All-Pac 10 S Dennis Smith short of the goal line on 4th down.  The Buckeyes were moving again when Schlichter hit WR Ty Hicks but Hicks fumbled at the Southern Cal 33-yard line.  Five plays later, the Trojans' All-Pac 10 QB Paul McDonald found WR Kevin Williams for a 53-yard touchdown pass giving Southern Cal a 10-0 lead.  Ohio State's PK Vlade Janakievski connected on a 35-yard field goal for the first points for the Buckeyes.  Southern Cal nearly turned the game into a rout when White broke loose for apparent 70-yard touchdown run but Buckeyes' S Todd Bell not only caught him from behind but also forced a fumble which Ohio State recovered.  Schlichter then found Williams for a 67-yard touchdown pass with 0:40 left & the game was tied 10-10 at halftime.  Janakievski kicked a 37-yard field goal for the only points of the 3rd quarter & his 24-yard field goal left the Buckeyes with a 16-10 advantage midway through the final period.  White then accounted for 71 yards, including a 32-yard gain on the first play of the drive & a 28-yard run later, on the 8-play, 83-yard scoring drive as the Trojans took a 17-16 lead on his 1-yard touchdown run with just 1:32 to play.  The Buckeyes were unable to respond as Schlichter threw 4 incomplete passes & the Trojans had secured The Belt.  With the win, Southern Cal become the first Belt champion to hold the title through an entire season.  McDonald finished with 234 yards passing with his touchdown for Southern Cal.  Schlichter finished with 289 passing with his touchdown while Williams had 3 catches for 131 yards with his score & WR Doug Donley added 4 catches for 110 yards for the Buckeyes.  Southern Cal finished the season 11-0-1; Pac-10 Champions & ranked 2nd nationally while the Buckeyes finished 11-1, Big Ten Champions & ranked 4th nationally.  Ohio State would play for The Belt again in 1981.
