Off their road win against Arizona State, the UCLA Bruins of coach Terry Donahue jumped to 5th in the polls & tried to become Arizona state champions by defeating the Arizona Wildcats of coach Jim Young.  Arizona was 1-0 having defeated Auburn.  UCLA's All-Pac 8 RB Theotis Brown scored 2 touchdowns as the Bruins broke the game open with 4 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter on their way to a 37-9 victory over the Wildcats.  Arizona got on the board quickly with All-WAC PK Lee Pistor kicking a 26-yard field goal less than a minute into the game giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.  The Bruins’ offense sputtered throughout the 1st half & the only points UCLA got came when All-Pac 8 CB Levi Armstrong returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown giving the Bruins a 7-3 lead they held at the intermission.  In the 3rd quarter, the UCLA offense clicked as they scored all 4 times they had the ball.  Brown scored on a 31-yard touchdown run just 1:35 into the quarter giving the Bruins a 14-3 lead.  UCLA's RB Wendell Tyler broke loose for a 45-yard touchdown run; the missed extra-point attempt still gave the Bruins a 20-3 lead.  Brown’s second touchdown came on a 10-yard run with 3:52 left in the quarter & QB Steve Bukich connected with WR Homer Butler for a 34-yard touchdown pass on the last play of the 3rd quarter giving UCLA a 34-3 advantage.  Early in the 4th quarter, UCLA's All-Pac 8 PK Frank Corral hit a 42-yard field goal before the Wildcats scored their only touchdown midway through the period on a 5-yard touchdown run by RB Lynn Dickerson.  Bukick finished with 71 yards passing with a touchdown while QB Jeff Dankworth threw for 84 yards with an interception for the Bruins.  Arizona's QB Marc Lunsford completed just 5 of 13 pass attempts for 75 yards in the loss.  UCLA finished the season 9-2-1; ranked 15th nationally while the Wildcats finished 5-6 in Young’s final season.  Arizona would play for The Belt again in 1978.
