Coach Pete Elliot of the Miami Hurricanes must have owed someone at the university a huge favor to take the position of head football coach. In his first season, his Hurricanes’ team played Texas, Florida State, Oklahoma, Boston College, Houston, Syracuse, West Virginia, Army, Alabama, & Florida; all these before the battle for The Belt with the 5th ranked, 9-0 Notre Dame Fighting Irish of coach Ara Parseghian. Somewhat surprisingly, they came through to meet the Fighting Irish with 5 wins in the 10 games. The tough schedule had taken its toll on the Hurricanes & the Fighting Irish dominated the game 44-0 as RB Wayne Bullock rushed for 116 yards with 2 touchdowns. Bullock scored in the 1st quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run & in the 2nd quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Fighting Irish took control of the game early. The 1st quarter drive covered 82 yards & was highlighted by a 40-yard run from Notre Dame's RB Art Best. Miami's missed field goal attempt set-up the 2nd quarter score with the Fighting Irish pushing the lead to 14-0 without throwing a pass. Notre Dame's QB Tom Clements found WR Pete Demmerle for a 21-yard touchdown pass & PK Bob Thomas connected on a 47-yard field goal as the Fighting Irish took a 24-0 halftime lead. The 3rd quarter was no different as Notre Dame's RB Eric Penick scored on a 9-yard touchdown run & Clements found Demmerle for a 7-yard touchdown pass for a 38-0 lead heading into the final period. Fighting Irish's back-up QB Cliff Brown scored the final points for Notre Dame on a 6-yard touchdown run. Clements finished with 98 yards passing with his 2 touchdowns & the Fighting Irish rushed for 448 yards. Miami's QB Ed Carney threw for just 72 yards & the Hurricanes' offense was held to 38 yards rushing in the shutout loss. Notre Dame finished the season 11-0 & claimed the National Championship while the Hurricanes finished 5-6. Miami would play again for The Belt in 1977.
