UCLA’s second title defense was against Big Ten power Michigan coached by Bo Schembechler. The 6th ranked Bruins coached by Pepper Rodgers were 2-0 while the 12th ranked Wolverines brought a 1-0 record. Led by QB Dennis Franklin, All-Big Ten RB Ed Shuttlesworth & RB Chuck Heater, All-American RT Paul Seymour, & All-American LB Randy Logan the Wolverines overpowered the UCLA wishbone offense. Shuttlesworth rushed for 115 yards & 2 touchdowns as Michigan claimed their first Belt championship with a 26-9 victory. The game was billed as a confrontation between UCLA's QB Mark Harmon & the Alma Mater of his father, the 1940 Heisman Trophy winner Tom Harmon. The game didn’t play out that way though as Harmon was hit in the head with an elbow & did not play after the second UCLA series. The Wolverines took the lead midway through the 1st quarter when WR Clint Haslerig scored on a 4-yard touchdown run. They pushed the lead to 14-0 on the first play of the 2nd quarter when RB Harry Banks finished an 11-play, 60-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. UCLA got on the board with their next drive when PK Efren Herrera hit a 39-yard field goal but the Bruins still trailed 13-3 at the half. Shuttlesworth’s first touchdown came at the end of a 12-play, 80-yard drive on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Wolverines pushed the lead to 20-3. UCLA’s lone touchdown came late in the 3rd quarter when All-Pac 8 RB James McAlister score on a 1-yard touchdown run. Michigan responded on their next drive with Shuttlesworth scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run with 12:11 left in the game. Neither team managed to score again & the Wolverines took The Belt to the Big Ten. Michigan's offense easily dominated the game rushing for 389 yards & gaining 28 first downs. Franklin completed 4 of 6 pass attempts for 41 yards while UCLA's back-up QB Rob Scribner threw for 60 yards in the loss. Michigan finished the season 10-1; Big Ten Co-Champs & ranked 6th nationally while the Bruins finished 8-3; ranked 15th nationally. UCLA would play for The Belt again in 1975.
